About Microsoft

Microsoft is a world wide technology company with its central office located in Redmond, Washington, USA. It is named after the words microcomputer and software. They are responsible for creating, manufacturing, licensing, supporting and selling computer software, electronics, and computers. Examples of software products include Microsoft Windows operating systems like Windows XP, the Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and Internet Explorer and Edge internet browsers. They have also created hardware items like Xbox (video game console) and touchscreen personal computers. They make the most revenue out of all of the world's largest software makers and are one of the world's most valuable companies in the world.

Founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen on April 4, 1975, Microsoft developed and sold BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800. Basic was the dominant computer operating system in the 1980s with MS-DOS, which was proceded by Microsoft Windows. In 2000, Steve Ballmer became CEO and expanded the business to include devices and services.

Microsoft went public in 1986. It's stock have been steadily increasing in the 1990s. It is now the most valuable publicly traded company in the world. Their success can be attributed to additional diversification from just operating systems to corporate acquisitions. Recent large aquisitions by Microsoft include 2008 with Danger Inc., LinkedIn ($26 billion) in 2016 and Sykpe ($8.5 billion) in 2011. They have an internet search with Bing, digital services through MSN, HoloLens, Azure, and Visual Studio.

As of 2015, Microsoft is market-dominant in the IBM PC-compatible operating system market and the office software suite market, although it has lost the majority of the overall operating system market to Android. The company also produces a wide range of other consumer and enterprise software for desktops and servers, including Internet search (with Bing), the digital services market (through MSN), mixed reality (HoloLens), cloud computing (Azure) and software development (Visual Studio). They have launched a line of tablet computers and are expanding to mobile services through acquisition of Nokia's devises and services department. Microsoft is moving away from hardward in order to persue cloud computing.
